2. Your Weight
3. Your Chest circumference (wearing a t-shirt only).
Use a measuring tape and measure around your chest (at nipples level).

4. Your Waist circumference (at belly button level).

With the arms relaxed and down at the side, measure around the shoulders just above the biceps. (Don’t take this measurement yourself, ask somebody else to help you so that you have both your arms down at the sides during measurement).

JACKET, AVIATOR INTERMEDIATE LEATHER, TYPE G-1
L.W.FOSTER SPORTSWEAR CO. INC. 55-J-14 (AER)
JACKET, AVIATOR INTERMEDIATE LEATHER, TYPE G-1
£1,200.00
Introduced by the United States Navy in 1947, the G-1 jacket represents the natural evolution of its distinguished predecessors—the M-422, M-422A, AN-6552, and AN-J-3A—refined through continuous development to meet the demands of naval aviation.
The 55-J-14 contract brought subtle yet purposeful improvements. The body was cut slightly shorter than that of the M-422A, ensuring comfort and functionality while seated in the cockpit, eliminating unnecessary bunching. The silhouette was also refined, often presenting a closer, more tailored fit relative to its stated size.
A defining feature of all original 55-J-14 jackets is the painted “USN” stencil beneath the mouton collar—an authentic detail faithfully preserved. The design remains otherwise true to its lineage: dual front patch pockets with integrated pencil slot, a left internal map pocket, bi-swing back pleats for enhanced mobility, gusseted sleeves, a distinctive mouton collar, and a rib-rack waistband—all elements that have come to define the iconic naval flight jacket.
Production of the 55-J-14 continued until approximately 1951, after which it was succeeded by the MIL-J-7823 (AER).
Our reproduction is based on contract No. N-383s-96273 by L.W. Foster Sportswear Co. Inc.—the largest producer of this model and widely regarded as one of the most desirable among collectors and enthusiasts.
The G-1 achieved global cultural recognition in 1986, when it was worn by Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell—portrayed by Tom Cruise—in the iconic film Top Gun, centered on the U.S. Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School. The same jacket appeared again in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick. The original screen-used piece has been definitively identified as an L.W. Foster 55-J-14.
Our interpretation is executed using the finest materials available, including a period-correct Conmar zipper, and stands among the most accurate G-1 reproductions in existence—both in construction and detail.
Fit Advisory
The 55-J-14 is characterized by broader shoulders and chest, combined with a more pronounced taper toward the waist than earlier M-422 variants. This results in a distinctly athletic silhouette, true to the proportions of naval aviators of the era.
As such, the fit may feel restrictive around the midsection if these proportions are not closely matched. Careful size selection is essential. When in doubt, we recommend opting for one size larger to ensure optimal comfort.
