The United States Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAero) first introduced the M-422 flight jacket to its aviators in 1938, establishing a new standard in naval aviation apparel. This remarkable garment soon secured its place in history as one of the first American uniform pieces to see active combat, worn by the legendary Flying Tigers—the American Volunteer Group—during their operations over China beginning in April 1941.

True to its original specification, the M-422 was crafted from seal brown goatskin, complemented by a richly toned reddish-brown mouton (lambswool) collar, rib-rack cuffs, and a single-layer waistband.
