Top Gun jacket
Top Gun jacket
£1,800.00
Based on the U.S. Navy’s G-1 flight jacket worn by naval aviators the “Top Gun” jacket has become one of the most recognizable leather jackets ever made — a symbol of jet-age military aviation, swagger, and classic American style.
Worn by Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 1986 film, the “Top Gun” jacket combines authentic military heritage with bold squadron artwork and a heavily worn combat-ready appearance. The original screen-used jacket has been identified as one from the postwar specification 55-J-14 (AER), manufactured by L.W. Foster Sportswear Co. Inc. The giveaway characteristics are the particular USN stencil at the back of the collar, the scalloped pocket flaps and the vertical stitch pencil slot on the left pocket.
Crafted as a faithful reproduction of the iconic “Top Gun” jacket, this piece captures the spirit of Cold War naval aviation and the golden age of fighter pilots. Made from premium full-grain Italian goatskin, our jacket includes all the classic G-1 features, i.e.
- bi-swing action back
- military-spec mouton fur collar
- ribbed wool cuffs and single-ply waistband
- storm flap front zipper closure
- patch pockets with button flaps
The richly grained leather is finished in a deep seal brown tone designed to develop character and patina with wear, just like original issued jackets.
What truly defines the” Top Gun” jacket is its collection of embroidered squadron and cruise patches. Specifically, the jacket is adorned with the following insignia:
Front
- Texas/Dallas patch
- Seabees
- 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Maw)
- 3rd Marine Amphibious Force
- USS William H. Standley
- USS Oriskany
- VF-1 Firebirds
- Navy Cap Device: E7 Chief Petty Officer
Left Sleeve
- Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida
- Silver Tab F-14 Tomcat
Right Sleeve
- Carrier Air Group 19 - CVG-19 Korean War Era
- Carrier Air Wing 2 - Top Ten, USS Ranger
Back
- COMCRUDESFLOT (Commander Cruiser Flotilla 9)
- USS Galveston Far East Cruise 63-4
- Jack Of All Trades
- COMCRUDESPAC (Commander Cruisers/Destroyers Pacific Fleet)
- USA Flag
- 7th Fleet
From a fictional story standpoint, most of these patches would likely have been on the jacket when Duke Mitchell (Pete’s father) owned it as they date to the 1950’s and 60s. The Tomcat, Top Ten, VF-1 Firebirds, and US flag at the back date later so they should be the ones that Maverick would have added to the jacket after he inherited it from his father. We have individually stitched each patch for an authentic vintage appearance.
Inside, the jacket is lined in military-spec rayon for comfort and durability, while the period correct Conmar zipper and genuine wool knits complete the authentic mid-century naval flight jacket construction.
More than just outerwear, the Top Gun jacket represents:
- naval aviation heritage
- rebellion and adventure
- postwar American cool
- the romance of carrier-based fighter aviation
Whether worn on a motorcycle, in the cockpit, or as a collector’s piece, this reproduction delivers the unmistakable presence of one of the most iconic jackets ever seen on film.
