£975.00

The 37J1 jacket, exquisitely crafted from capeskin leather, was introduced by the United States Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics in July 1927—emerging almost simultaneously with the U.S. Army Air Corps’ adoption of the iconic Type A-1. Its service life, though brief at approximately three years, marked an important transitional chapter in the evolution of military flight garments.

The original specification appears to have been interpreted with a degree of flexibility by manufacturers of the era, resulting in subtle yet fascinating variations in construction across surviving examples and period photography. This diversity may be attributed to loosely defined standards, the existence of pre-standardization test garments, or the possibility that naval aviators were permitted to wear privately acquired jackets of comparable design. Whatever the origin, these nuances have become an object of fascination for the discerning collector.

With this understanding, we are proud to offer a curated selection of meticulously researched reproductions, each reflecting the distinctive characteristics observed in authentic period variants. Every interpretation is approached with scholarly precision and artisanal sensitivity, honoring the spirit as well as the substance of the original garments.

By the early 1930s, the 37J1 was succeeded by a visually similar jacket rendered in “jungle cloth,” itself later replaced by the cotton M-421, and ultimately by the goatskin M-422 introduced in 1940—each evolution reflecting the advancing requirements of naval aviation.

Although this offering may be presented through the simplicity of a line drawing, it embodies a far more profound reality. Behind it lies an unwavering commitment to excellence: the materials, the craftsmanship, and the obsessive attention to historical detail that define every creation of Bill Kelso Mfg. What you receive is not merely a jacket, but a rare and considered expression of authenticity at its highest level.
