Produced under contract W535 ac-27753 in 1942, with an unsigned label, this A-2 flight jacket from Cable Raincoat Co. of Boston, Massachusetts is the third and last Cable contract issued to USAAF aircrew. Cable’s 27753 pattern is known for its slightly roomier fit and practical, clean construction, reflecting the company’s background in durable outerwear manufacturing. The jacket features horsehide leather, typically in russet color, with straight rectangular pocket flaps and neatly executed seam work. It uses medium to light-brown mustard cotton lining, wool knit cuffs and waistband in matching brown tones, and small ring-type snaps at the pockets and collar. Hardware generally includes Conmar or Talon zippers appropriate to the contract period. Stitching is commonly a light chestnut or reddish-brown, a subtle detail that helps identify the maker. Recognized for its comfortable cut, and straightforward design, the Cable Raincoat 27753 remains a highly respected and collectible A-2 pattern, appreciated by enthusiasts for its everyday wearability. The jacket on display is made with Liberty Horsehide Russet, mustard brown lining, Perry purple thread and original WWII NOS Baby Durable Snap Fasteners by United Carr.
